CHARLES LARKINS, JR.

Private Trumpet Instructor

I offer private trumpet lessons to students of all ages, whether you are a beginner, an adult wanting to renew your skills, or anywhere in between. Lessons are given in my studio on the west side of Ann Arbor and are either thirty or forty-five minutes in length. My experience, after working with hundreds of studecjl-bw-promo-shotnts during my teaching career, tells me that the majority of students are best served by improving their breath support and rhythmic accuracy. I spend a great deal of time working on these two areas of performance, in addition to helping students develop their musicality, range, and technique. As a native of Ann Arbor, I have lived and taught here for over forty years, this has allowed me to develop a close relationship with the various music teachers throughout the city. In addition to focusing on the fundamentals of trumpet playing, I make an effort to integrate school music into lessons.

At various times of the school year, students are presented with the opportunity to perform in extra-curricular activities, most notably “Solo & Ensemble Festival,”  “All State Band and Orchestra,” and the “Michigan Youth Arts Festival.”  I strongly encourage students to participate in each of these events, and offer support in their preparation efforts.

As an educator, I feel it is important that music lessons are more than learning how to play the trumpet. I get a great deal of satisfaction watching my students develop a keener sense of creativity and emotional expression. The study of music assists students in developing better concentration skills, coordination, patience, and self-confidence. From my point of view, watching this development take place is one of the perks of being a teacher. My teaching style encourages students to give their very best effort and is balanced with an understanding that music can be relaxing and fun.
